Good Bad Songs |
There really were't any "bad" songs (quiet from the peanut gallery) just ones we were'nt fond of.
A big one for me was U.S. Blues.
I have two questions,
1) Is there a hopping version of this. I would like to find as many "great" versions as I can 'cause I like the song, just not where it ended up. Which brings me to my next question...
2) Does anyone know how this song ended up as an ENCORE? It was always a buzz killer for me especially after a fairly hot show.

Re: Good Bad Songs |
I'm surprised- US Blues is so upbeat and patriotic (unless you dont feel patriotic, which is completely forgiveable). 7/4/1990 is a favorite of mine- good energy leftover after a great show (5 big ones pre-drums). The sons works for me as an encore because, well, where else would it fit, beside set closer?

Re: Good Bad Songs |
There is one from Boston in 1974 where they go from Weather Report Suite into a jam then into US Blues. You can hear US Blues several minutes before it actually starts. That is a fairly good one. I think it was a Dick's Pick.

Re: Good Bad Songs |
Muddy River was a little bit of a downer for an encore at times. Sometimes, though, you could really sway to it and it was a nice way to unwind for the "trip out."
I'm sure the older guys will create a long list of great 70's versions. There is one from 78 that completely rocks, but I forget.
Partial to Brent and the end of the 80's, 6-20-88 wasn't too shabby. And 4-5-89 had a decent US Blues to close first set.
Good tune, especially when Jerry gets on the throttle for "my oh my!"

Re: Good Bad Songs |
U.S. Blues is just a good old basic rock'n'roll song. In its early days it could pop up almost anywhere in a show but by the late 70s it was usually regulated to the encore slot. I especially liked the high energy, often sloppy, "rowdy-but-right" versions of the early-mid 80s.
I actually thought it was one of their better "regular" encores- ended the evening on a light, upbeat note as sort of a flip side to the more relaxed, contemplative closing vibes of "Baby Blue" or "Brokedown."
The tune I never liked was "El Paso". Whether coming out of massive 1972 "Dark Star" or standing alone, I always thought this was the worst tune, cover or otherwise, in the band's catalog (at least until some of the mega-lame 90s tunes like "Shoe Fits" "WTGH" "Samba" etc).

I don't know where this train of though first left the station, but who is the "we" that you mention? Because I like U.S. Blues and even though it was part of the standard fare encore-wise, I enjoyed it anyway, does that mean I'm kicked out of the puppy pile?

Re: Good Bad Songs |
dude - im with you - i love the song - and a damn sight better as an encore than a mellow encore song like black mud, or brokedown, or knocking - talking about a buzzkill coming after a rowsing sugar mag to end a second set - might as well have handed me a couple of vidodins leaving the show. time to hit the parking lot early to throw a tape on the car stereo and spark a bowl and start the party all over.

Re: Good Bad Songs |
Point well taken, but I feel differently about that, too, because no matter what the band felt like playing for an encore, rocker or ballad, something typical or something completely unpredictable, I tried to savor every minute of it. Not necessarily being a tour Head, always only being to catch a show when I was able because of other commitments in life, "A" show being the operative phrase here, never being too sure when the next opportunity to see them would arise, that encore song would most likely be my last glimpse of them for a comparitively long time, so I would take whatever I could get, and gobble it up with a spoon.

yeah, i was a tad overstating my thought - i can't say i ever left a show before the echoes of the last note had long left the arena.

Re: Good Bad Songs |
love black muddy river - one of my fav jerry ballads-just sit back, blow a bone and listen to that muddy river roll..
for some reason that song connects....
i remember going to my first show and thinking i'll never hear that song.not realizing at the time it was gonna be played like every 3rd show...and it was the encore and everyone sang along....good time.....i like the slow send off except for baby blue ...

I liked US Blues especially the 70's version of it but I hear you. Any of the new songs brought it down for me. I might be inclined to say Blow Job I mean Day Job but after it disappeared I found myself strangely missing it.

Re: Good Bad Songs |
In addition to DUKE '78 try Selland 7-19-74 (an amazing show!! anyway). Selland set two is:
1. He's Gone
2. U.S. Blues
3. Weather Report Prelude/Part 1
4. Weather Report Part II->Let It Grow
5. Spanish Jam
6. Eyes of the World
7. China Doll
